Night visit to Burj Khalifa? Don't pay full price

The Burj Khalifa in Dubai is the tallest building in the world and it's a must to visit if you're in the city. If you want to get the most out of your visit, you need to see it by day and night. I will tell you how to save money on the more expensive night visit.

First, some numbers. The building is 828 meters high and has the most stories in the world, 160 to be precise. It also features the highest occupied floor in the world and the highest observation deck open to the public. Level 148 is at an altitude of 555 meters. The main observation deck is located on levels 124 and 125 at 456 meters. Don't worry about a slow elevator, because they cruise at a speed of ten meters per second. You might feel some pressure in your ears.

The 125th floor offers 360-degree views of the Palm Jumeirah, The World,  Dubai Mall, Burj al Arab, the desert and many other places. The cheapest way to get to the 125th floor of the observation deck is to book in advance on the website of the Burj Khalifa. Tickets go on sale 90 days in advance and base prices start at 149 AED for levels 124 and 125. Level 148 starts at 378 AED.

There's a catch! The Burj Khalifa uses a calendar you can use to select the day you want to visit. This calendar shows 'starting at' rates and they are flexible. That means certain times of the day tickets are more expensive. You're basically booking a time slot and there are only a limited number of tickets available for that time slot. I've seen prices fluctuating between 149 AED and 234 AED, an increase of 57%. Keep in mind you have to be on scene twenty minutes before your time slot and you can go up straight away.

Save money for sunset visits

The best time to visit is at sunset. Times depend on the season and will be anywhere between 5.30pm and 7pm. The best experience is the transitioning from daylight to darkness so arrive in time. Compare rates of slots available and the time the sun sets in Dubai for your day. End of the day slots between 4pm and 6pm are way more expensive if you book short in advance. The longer in advance you book, the better your rate will be and the more likely you'll be able to get up for 149 AED.

Pro tip: if sunset is at 7pm, book a slot at 6.30pm. If sunset is at 5.30pm, book a slot at 3.30pm. This way you avoid prime time ticket prices and still have plenty of time to secure a good spot.
